The launch confirms STC`s pioneering role in ICT in Saudi Arabia.
STC has launched the first live 5G network in Saudi Arabia, the initial phase of operating the service once 5G becomes generally available.
Eng. Abdullah Alkanhal, undersecretary of the Ministry of CIT said the launch of 5G in Saudi Arabia reflects the improvement of the ICT sector in the Kingdom, in line with the country’s digitisation plans, NTP 2020, and the Kingdom`s Vision 2030. “The ministry under the guidance of Abdullah Alswaha, Minister of CIT, expends great effort to improve this vital sector for the prosperity and comfort of the people of Saudi Arabia.”
Eng. Nasser Al Nasser, STC Group CEO, expressed his pride of this launch that confirms STC`s pioneering position in providing innovative services for the customers around the Kingdom and the region. He added, “We have the confidence, knowledge and innovation that will enable us to lead the 5G era”.
STC will initially launch 5G in the Eastern region of the country. The company will then continue rolling out the network to the rest of the country, until 5G-enabled devices are available in the market in 2019, Eng. Al Nasser said.
As part of the launch ceremony, the company showcased various 5G applications such as a virtual review of neighbourhood services, a 5G car, and K4 Videos.
In January 2017, STC engaged in a series of technical experiments and 5G trials.
5G networks are expected to drive a quantum leap in future services and applications, and will contribute in increasing the speed and performance of wireless networks. 5G will not only affect the efficiency of communication between people and their phones or computers, but also advance the adoption of more sophisticated use cases such as IOT, AI and robots.
