Dubai to track five-gallon bottles for safety through smart labelling

Dubai Municipality is rolling out a new smart labelling and tracking system for five-gallon water bottles. Gulf News reported that a smart labelling system will be implemented at all bottled water manufacturing companies in the emirate within two months. The report said that the new initiative, first annouced in August last year, will help ensure that the bottle do not cross the limit for refilling since 'reusing polycarbonate plastic bottles above the permitted limit can harm the health of consumers. Overused bottles can release carcinogenic and endocrine disruptive compounds in drinking water.'
