EPC contract awarded for Masdar’s wind power project in Oman
The 50MW wind farm will power 16,000 homes and offset 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
Masdar has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) with a global consortium to build the Dhofar Wind Power Project, GCC’s first large-scale wind farm in Oman.
GE will lead the EPC consortium by providing 13 wind turbines powered by the company’s latest 3.8MW wind turbine generator solution. Spain’s TSK will handle the remaining construction of the plant, according to a report in WAM.
The project is part of a joint development agreement established in 2014 between Abu Dhabi’s Masdar and Oman’s Rural Area Electricity Company (RAECO).
Situated in the southern governorate, bordering Yemen, the 50MW wind farm is being funded by the Abu Dhabi Fun for Development (ADFD).
The plant is expected to power an estimated 16,000 homes and offset 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year. "The signing of this agreement signifies a major step in the development of the Dhofar Wind Power Project and is testimony to the strong relationship between the Sultanate and the UAE. We look forward to the signing of other associated agreements related to the project this October,” according to Saleh Bin Nasser Al Rumhi, chief executive officer of RAECO Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, director general of ADFD said: "This 50 MW project will not only serve as a model of modern power generation but more importantly, demonstrate the commercial viability of wind technology in the Sultanate. In addition, it will help facilitate greater knowledge transfer in renewable energy between the UAE and Oman.” Other projects wind energy projects by Masdar include the 117MW Tafila wind farm in Jordan, the Middle East’s first utility-scale wind power project, the world’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farm in Scotland and the London Array and Dudgeon offshore wind farms in the U
